  • an artistic and literary movement developed in mid-191os in Zurich, but its art varies widely.
  • a reaction to World War I, extreme nationalism and rationalism.
  • believed that the 'reason' and 'logic' of bourgeois capitalist society had led people into war. They rejected this by artistic expression that rejected logic and embraced chaos and irrationality
  • An aesthetic style marked by mockery of materialistic and nationalistic attitudes. The movement is believed to have dissipated with the arrival of Surrealist in France.
  • Influenced by ideas and innovations from early avant-garde movements - Cubism, Futurism, Constructivism, and Expressionism - its output ranges from performance art to photography, sculpture, and painting. 
  • the concept is more important than the content of the art
  • One main rule - don't follow any rule
