Post Impressionism

(c.1885-1905)

  • not a particular style of painting, a title given to the independent artists since Manet at the end of the 19th century who were dissatisfied with the triviality of subject matter and the loss of structure in Impressionist paintings
  • continued using vivid colours, often thick application of paint, and real-life subject matter, but emphasized geometric forms, to distort form for expressive effect, and to use unnatural or arbitrary colour
  • rebelled against the limitations of Impressionism to develop a range of personal styles that influenced the art in the 20th century. 
  • The major artists - Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, and Georges Seurat.
  • Cézanne would be an important influence on Picasso in the development of Cubism. 
  • Van Gogh's vigorous and vibrant technique was one of the touchstones of Fauvism and Expressionism.
